Our Screening Range

DTM Timber supplies Australian hardwood screening products for residential, commercial and architectural outdoor applications. Screening is commonly used where privacy, shade, visual separation and natural hardwood appearance are required.

Screening products are generally supplied in Standard & Better and Utility appearance grades, with grading based on the natural features permitted in the finished product. Appearance grading aligns with recognised industry practice and relevant provisions of AS 2796 – Timber – Hardwood – Sawn and milled products, where timber is sorted according to visible features and presentation requirements. Appearance products are graded differently to structural products, which use stress grades such as F-grades.

Screening is commonly supplied in set length packs, making it suitable for repeatable batten layouts, screen panels, privacy screens and façade-style applications. Products are supplied treated using TAN-E for external service conditions.

Standard & Better Screening

Standard & Better screening combines higher appearance grades into a practical product range suited to visible screening, batten and architectural applications. This grade grouping provides a cleaner and more consistent appearance while still allowing the natural colour, grain and feature variation expected in Australian hardwood.

Standard & Better screening is commonly selected where the finished presentation is important, including privacy screens, front fences, outdoor rooms, feature battens and commercial landscape projects. Natural features such as gum veins, small knots, insect markings and colour variation may still occur within allowable grading limits.

This grade is well suited to applications where the timber remains visible and forms part of the finished design.

Common Applications
Key Features

Australian hardwood screening is a natural product. Variation in colour, grain and feature characteristics should be expected as part of the finished appearance.

Utility Screening

Utility screening is supplied for applications where function, durability and economy are prioritised over visual consistency. This grade permits a higher level of natural feature variation, making it suitable for practical screening applications where a more rustic or varied appearance is acceptable.

Utility grade screening may include features such as gum veins, insect markings, surface checks, small knots and other natural imperfections within acceptable grading limits. It may also include shorter length material depending on pack and product availability.

This grade is commonly selected for larger external projects, practical screening, landscape use and applications where the timber is viewed from distance or where appearance variation is acceptable.

Common Applications
Key Features

Utility grade screening allows greater colour variation, natural features and visual inconsistency compared with Standard & Better grades.

ScreeningD
Screening Profiles & Set Length Packs

Hardwood screening is commonly supplied as narrow boards or battens used to create privacy, shade, visual separation and architectural detail. Profiles and sizes may vary depending on species, machining requirements and product availability.

Screening is often supplied in set length packs, making it suitable for repeated spacing, modular screen panels and consistent installation layouts. Set lengths can assist with planning, waste control and efficient installation across fencing, façade and landscape projects.

Common screening and batten sizes include smaller rectangular and square sections depending on application and product availability. Correct spacing, fixing, ventilation and ongoing maintenance are important for long-term external performance and appearance retention.
