HARDWOOD DECKING – Australian Timber Decking for Outdoor Areas

DTM Timber supplies Australian hardwood decking designed for long-term performance in exposed outdoor environments. Our decking is suitable for residential and commercial applications, including decks, verandahs, patios and walkways, where durability, strength and natural appearance are essential.

Hardwood decking remains a proven choice for projects requiring solid timber underfoot, natural colour variation and reliable in-service performance.

What We Supply

DTM Timber supplies solid hardwood decking boards only. We do not supply composite decking or tongue-and-groove profiles.

Available decking options include a range of Australian hardwood species and blends selected for strength, durability and availability, including:

  • Forest Reds
  • Spotted Gum
  • Ironbark
  • Mixed Hardwoods

This range allows designers and builders to balance appearance, hardness, durability and budget considerations.

Decking Grades

DTM Timber supplies hardwood decking in a range of appearance grades. Timber is a natural material, and grading reflects the level of visible natural features rather than durability or structural capability.

Select Grade

Select Grade decking offers a clean, modern appearance by selecting boards with a minimal level of natural features. This premium grade highlights the natural tones, textures and grain patterns of the timber while limiting visual imperfections.

Select Grade is commonly specified for architectural decks, feature areas and applications where visual consistency is a priority.

Standard and Better Grade

Standard and Better Grade decking is a combination of select and standard boards, providing a balance between appearance, performance and value.

This grade allows some natural features such as gum veins, insect markings, surface checks and small knots, while maintaining durability and structural performance suitable for external decking applications.

Standard and Better Grade is a popular choice for residential decks and general-purpose outdoor areas.

Utility Grade

Utility Grade decking embraces timber’s natural character and variation. Often described as “embossed with nature’s signature,” this grade allows a high level of natural features, including gum veins, insect markings, surface checks, small knots and other natural imperfections.

Utility Grade is often supplied in shorter lengths and is well suited to cost-sensitive projects, rural applications or designs where a rustic or natural appearance is acceptable.

Performance in External Applications

Hardwood decking is commonly specified for outdoor projects due to its:

  • Durability in exposed conditions, when correctly detailed and maintained
  • High strength and impact resistance, suitable for high-traffic areas
  • Natural timber appearance, with the option to weather naturally or be coated
  • Versatility, across decks, stairs, landings and outdoor structures

Correct specification and installation are critical to achieving long service life.

Fixing, Detailing & Ongoing Performance

Decking performance depends heavily on appropriate fixing and detailing. Key considerations include:

  • Adequate subfloor ventilation and ground clearance
  • Correct fastener selection for environmental exposure
  • Board spacing to allow for drainage and seasonal movement
  • Maintenance programs aligned with sun exposure and usage

DTM Timber provides general guidance to support correct use of hardwood decking. Installation workmanship and compliance remain the responsibility of the installer.

Environmental & Sustainability Considerations

Hardwood decking offers strong environmental advantages when sourced and processed responsibly:

  • Renewable material sourced from sustainably managed forests
  • Carbon storage for the life of the product
  • Lower embodied energy compared with many alternative decking materials
  • Efficient use of timber resources, with high recovery during processing

DTM Timber’s environmental approach focuses on responsible sourcing, efficient processing and long-term product performance.
